Sue Clayton - Western Australia

I'm a 63 year old widow, Mother of 5 adult Indigenous children, Grandmother of 8. I'm not Indigenous to W.A. in fact my ancestry is Canadian Aboriginal/British, however I have been a part of the Nyoongar community since the age of 14 so I have seen, heard, experienced much. In my opinion the first thing that needs to be done in order to engage Ingenous youth into gainful employment is, START WITH THE FAMILIES, PARENTS. No matter what is offered to Indigenous youth it is meaningless unless they have the FULL support of family members. For adults it's also important to have the support of their family because without it, nothing will be meaningful. Alchol plays a HUGE part in the issues Indigenous people face and I believe more mentoring programmes must be made available (the more informal the better) so the adults can gain self esteem, confidence and belief in themselves as human beings. I could probably say much more on this subject but that's all for now. If you wish more of me, please ask questions. Thank you.
