Australian Employment Covenant

Overview:

Sustainable employment is critical to personal wellbeing, self esteem and confidence- and it’s good for our economy. The Indigenous unemployment rate is around three times higher than that of non-Indigenous people. We can change that and close the gap on Indigenous disparity.

To increase Indigenous employment, we're partnered with the Australian Employment Covenant (AEC), a national industry-led initiative, aimed at securing the commitment of sustainable jobs for Indigenous Australians. The vision is to bring Australians together to break the vicious cycle of unemployment, hopelessness and poverty that exists in our communities and among many Indigenous.

The goal of the AEC is to create the demand for sustainable jobs to be filled by Indigenous Australian as and when those companies need employees. Targeting 50,000 sustainable jobs, the AEC is assisting employers and employment providers who facilitate the placement into these roles. This represents a major commitment to providing the majority of Indigenous Australians, with a real opportunity to achieve their full potential as productive members of Australian society.
