Youth Jobs PaTH and the Australian Retailers Association
The Minderoo Foundation welcomes the announcement of a partnership between the Australian Retailers Association and the Turnbull Government to deliver up to 10,000 internships to young Australians.
The Australian Government has taken a step in the right direction with the PaTH programme. PaTH addresses the old chicken or the egg situation for long-term unemployed youth – where employers need people with experience and young people need the opportunity to get the experience. PaTH removes this hurdle by allowing youth to take up an internship with the offer of a real job at the completion if they complete the employer designed training and demonstrate they’re reliable and competent.”
Minderoo Foundation Chairman, Andrew Forrest said, “In Creating Parity, I called the Employment Services System the enormous Australian “Cash BBQ” where tax-payers are burning through billions of dollars a year in a broken system that rewards service provider’s failure at the job seeker’s expense. PaTH takes a small step towards resolving this issue but urgent reform of the much bigger $6.6 billion Job Active system is needed to truly address the skills and experience gap for the long-term unemployed.”
We commend the efforts of Russell ZImmerman and the Australian Retailers Association for taking leadership to support young Australians in their efforts to fulfill their potential.
