Is there an archetypal Australian Woman?
This is one of the topics, Tania Major, will be discussing on International Women’s Day, Tuesday 8thMarch at Parliament House.
The inspiring Tania Major, Young Australian of the Year 2007 and GenerationOne spokesperson, along with GenerationOne, a movement aimed at ending Indigenous disadvantage, has sponsored 3 young women from Dubbo to join her at Parliament House as part of International Women’s Day.
Tania will be talking on a panel with The Hon. Kate Ellis Minister for the Status of Women, ABC Journalist Annabel Crabbe and Executive Director of the Centre for Policy Development, Miriam Lyons.
The three young women, Emily Towney, Teleria Milson and Rowanne Jeffries from Dubbo are part of the Aboriginal Girls Circle, a program run by NAPCAN.
The Aboriginal Girls Circle project is supporting and encouraging young Aboriginal women to play an active part in their communities and the wider Australian community. The program builds social connections and confidence through strengthening relationship skills and by opening up opportunities for Aboriginal high school girls in regional and remote areas.
Tiffany Winters, Aboriginal Girls Circle Community Development Officer will accompany the girls on the trip. Tiffany is really excited for the girls, “This trip is an important activity for the girls to help build their self-confidence and build on their social connections. Learning from other inspiring women will be extremely beneficial. For some of them it is their first time on a plane and going to Parliament House on International Women’s Day will be a memorable experience for everyone, including me!” She said.
GenerationOne spokesperson, Tania Major, recently led a 3 day camp with program developer Dr Sue Roffey from the University of Western Sydney, which helped the young women learn about themselves and others in a positive and fun way.
“This is an important and exciting day for the young women. This opportunity will help build their social connections and give them more of an understanding of what lies ahead for them as strong, young Australian women,” Tania says.
