A local primary school has joined an initiative in an aim to end indigenous disparity in Australia.

Boulder Primary School students, from Years 5 to 7, will be working together to enter the GenerationOne Hands Across Australia School Competition for the chance to win $15,000.

GenerationOne is a movement to bring all Australians together to end the disparity between indigenous and non- indigenous Australians in one generation.

The Hands Across Australia School Competition is run in partnership with the Australian School of Performing Arts and encourages schools to perform and film their own version of the GenerationOne theme song.  Hands Across Australia, or create their own song which addresses their response to Indigenous disparity.

Megan Irving, who is coordinating the school’s entry, said Boulder Primary prides itself with the links to the community.  “The students chose to expand on this by involving members of the community who have a place in the lives of Boulder Primary School,” she said.

Teacher Jodene May said the school was excited about entering the competition.

“We decided to get involved in this competition firstly because we were looking at what it means to ‘belong’: not just at home, school and the community, but throughout Australia and the world,” she said.

“From this we discussed what it means to be a proactive community member and to have pride in your self and what you do.”
