The GenerationOne national roadshow is a once in a lifetime opportunity to do something about indigenous disadvantage, Treasurer Wayne Swan says.

The online GenerationOne campaign that was launched by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd at a gala event last week aims to get support in mentoring indigenous youth in education and help them find a job.

Mr Swan and Indigenous Affairs Minister Jenny Macklin launched the GenerationOne bus on the forecourt of Parliament House in Canberra on Thursday.

"GenerationOne is a once in a lifetime opportunity to support indigenous Australians to do something about indigenous disadvantage," Mr Swan told reporters.

"It's a sad fact that unemployment rates in indigenous communities are four times the rate of other communities."

The distinctive black coach with GenerationOne plastered on its side in orange and yellow will tour 22 cities and regional centres to promote the campaign and look for practical solutions.

"We can all do our bit to close the gap between indigenous and non-indigenous Australians," Ms Macklin said.
