Certificate IV in Education
As a mother of five and grandmother of six, May Passi could just have easily been happy to continue in her role as a teacher aide and matriarch to her family.
But instead, she has opted to study at university to become a teacher to learn the best techniques to ensure Indigenous culture is not lost and to be the best role model to the people she loves.
May, 51, from Thursday Island, recently completed a Certificate IV in Education through RATEP and plans to continue her study next year.
“I will be a role model to other people,” May said. “They will see people my age completing it and hopefully be motivated to give it a go. I became inquisitive about things and wanting to know more about education so I can help more children.”
May said full time study was hard, given she continued to work full time, but was worth the effort.
“By doing this course I will be able to teach culture in a different way,” she said.
