For Anthony Turnbull, the decision to study a Certificate IV in Education meant putting down the newspaper and replacing it with a textbook.

And even though the new form of literature took some getting used to, Anthony couldn’t be happier with the choice he made.

The teacher aide, who lives in Toowoomba, said he planned to study the Diploma of Education in 2011, and was keeping his options open for further study in 2012.

“I’ve always wanted to work with kids,’ Anthony said.  “I want to be a positive role model for the kids and to help steer them in the right path in life.”

As well as working full time as a teacher aide, Anthony also works with Lifeline as a youth worker.

“If I can make a difference in one kid’s life and they go on to do great things then I have done my job,” he said.

Anthony, 44, said studying with RATEP was an enjoyable experience, once he was used to reading textbooks.

“In the first two months I found myself reading a lot of stuff that I didn’t understand and it used to really drain me,” he said.  “But overall I found it pretty good.”
