Determination sees student return to school

Anthony Baker originates from Borroloola in eastern NT on the Gulf of Carpentaria. Anthony left school at the age of 13 and went to work for his family and on various cattle stations for the next several years. In early 2009 Anthony heard about a seven month residential pre-employment course called the Defence Indigenous Development Program and decided to sign up.

Anthony graduated from the program in December 2009 as the inaugural Student of Merit.

A couple of weeks later, on Christmas Eve, Anthony received a phone call from one of the DIDP staff members saying that he had been awarded a scholarship to complete his schooling at one of Australia’s premier private schools – St Joseph’s College Hunters Hill. Anthony is now a boarding student at “Joeys”, and hopes to go to the Royal Military College and become an Army Officer after he completes Year 12.
