Real Job in all sorts of places

At GenerationOne we support real, sustainable jobs for Indigenous people across the spectrum of industries and regions. Not just mining, but retail, services, hospitality, tourism - you name it. We know that 70% of Indigenous people live in urban and regional cities and towns and can, with the right education, training and opportunity participate in a range of jobs. We know the Australian Employment Covenant has gathered employers who, between them, have committed over 20,000 jobs for Indigenous people. And many others are doing likewise. This article also shows what is being done in just one project in more remote areas to provide full time, sustainable real jobs for stockmen. ... More...

GenerationOne Hits Melbourne (Storm) - Paul Knight

Hi Guys I went along to the activation event in Melbourne this morning at Federation Square. The rain was coming down and it was black and not with the good types of blacks it was those dam clouds. We had some of the local mob dancing and Brothablack was fantastic MC'ing. Paul Sinclair from AIME gave a great speech and it is amazing what you can learn when you're in the jungle (for those that were there you will know what I mean) for the rest of you you will just need to get along to the next event to see what your missing. We are in Horsham Tuesday morning, early 8am - 10am. Cheers Paul ... More...

Guest Post - "Awareness fueling hope"

This is a guest post from Belinda Huntriss, the Brisbane Program Manager for the Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience (AIME): I'm a pretty friendly outgoing person who is always up for a yarn to anyone who will listen (just ask my family- I’m sure they will tell you I could talk the leg off a chair!). Because of my upbringing & approachability, I‘ve been fortunate enough to have the opportunity to meet with people from all different backgrounds, religions, cultures and age groups from across Australia, learning plenty along the way. ... Join the Movement

Use the form in the top-right to join the movement and be a part of the generation for change. For too long we've put off solving Indigenous disadvantage -- expected government or "someone else" to take care of it. And many of us ignored it completely, hopelessly thinking that there's nothing we can do – that dependence and despair are too big of barriers. So, we've waited, letting pass another day, another year ... another generation. ... More...

Actions Speak Louder Than Words

It is important that we consult with people and GenerationOne is actively canvassing people to provide ideas and the things that work in your local area. There is no question though, that GenerationOne favours real action.  This article by Paul Toohey is an interesting one about the balance between consultation and action.  Warren Mundine supports a strong job emphasis.  "I'm beyond the representative body," he says. "It's now about how we get real meat on the bone of indigenous development. That's the real area. "We've had representative bodies going back to my childhood. We need to move beyond that. We need individual wealth in our communities." ... More...

Guest post by Christopher Franklin

This is a guest post from Christopher Franklin, the winner of the GenerationOne Launch Contest, about his experience attending the March 19th festivities. Generation One is the practical initiative being led by Australia’s top business and community leaders to actively reduce the disparity of opportunities between indigenous and non-indigenous Australians. The organisation seeks commitments from Australian employers and the broader Australian public to provide training to and the employment of, indigenous Australians. This generation shall be the first to overcome the long history of inequality, the generation where our indigenous brothers and sisters shall no longer be second class citizens in their own country, this is Generation One. ... Last Friday

What a day. Started early Mc’ing a Business breakfast with James Packer and Andrew Forrest and some of the major players in Australian business. This gig was the real deal. Packer and Forrest canned the pre prepared speeches and spoke from the heart. These guys want to see a change. The tone was set. At 11 I partnered up with Andrew to facilitate an Indigenous community forum. We had a number of groups and individuals who already do amazing work in this space... ... More...
