Career Ready - Vocational Training and Employment Centres

January 23 at Yaama Dhiyaan in Sydney’s inner west, stakeholders including Hon. Julie Collins, Federal Minister for Indigenous Employment and Economic Development, joined with Deb Nelson, Managing Director of Yarn’n Aboriginal Employment Services; Rhonda Parker, CEO Australian Employment Covenant; Tim Gartrell, CEO GenerationOne and other stakeholders to officially launch the Career Ready – Vocational Training and Employment Centres Policy. The policy is calling for two main things - an employer-driven training process that will eliminate training for training’s sake, replacing it with training for a guaranteed job and four VTEC training sites around Australia.  The policy was developed after a year’s worth of community consultation and research. &... Indigenous Employment Success

A new study commissioned by GenerationOne; Case Studies of Success highlights six Australian employers who are pioneering developments in Indigenous job opportunities.  The Case Studies of Success shares the supportive actions Crown Melbourne Limited, Burswood Entertainment Complex, Karen Sheldon Catering, ISS Australia, Skill360 Australia and Woolworths are taking to boosting Indigenous Australians from unemployment into jobs.   “The GenerationOne Walk in My Shoes report clearly showed that people want to see a job at the end of training.  The programs run by these six organisations are giving job seekers that clear path to employment,” said GenerationOne spokesperson, Tania Major.    ... Balancing Culture and Career – the story of a future Mayor of his community

When Bernard Charlie gets home from his month long stints on the Port Hedland railway line in Western Australia, it doesn’t take him long to settle back into his community.  “You know you can be months and months away, and it takes five minutes and you’re home,” the 36 year-old said.  The small Aboriginal community, Umagico, located on the Northern Peninsula of Queensland, is home to about  270 people.   When Bernard was growing up, high unemployment rates, alcohol and smoking plagued his community.  He witnessed welfare dependency, and is determined to make a change for himself and set and example to his neighbours and friends.    ... The Alau Spirit

Some people join teams for fitness, others join for fun and competition.  The Alau Eagles Rugby League team from Umagico, Cape York, is all of these things - and much more.  It’s a brotherhood where men can grow, mature and ultimately fly. The Alau team have celebrated a decade of unprecedented success, with the highest number of wins and cups in the Northern Peninsula area. “They have won premierships and they have won carnivals and they have won the Torres Strait Cup,” says the team’s captain, Peter Lui.    ... Yirara and Living Waters Colleges in Alice Springs  and Collarenenbri Central School were today announced as the winners of GenerationOne’s groundbreaking Hands Across Australia School Competition for 2011, a unique national competition giving schools the opportunity to showcase their performing arts skills. Partnering with the Australian School of Performing Arts, the competition encourages teachers and students to actively engage with the issues of Indigenous education, employment and training and ending the disparity between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians in one generation – this generation. Both entries into the competition have been awarded a GenerationOne – Hands Across Australia Education Award valued at $15,000. ... More...

And the winner is...

The winners of the 2011 Hands Across Australia School Song Competition will be announced at 1:30pm (AEDST) Thursday October 20th 2011. This broadcast will be shown on Foxtel and Austar (Channel 648) as well as being streamed live on the Generation One and APAC websites at www.generationone.org.au and www.a-pac.tv After a long deliberation, Maddy Madden and Tania Major combined with industry expert judges have decided on the winners of the 2011 School Song Competition. The winners announcement will be hosted by Maddy Madden and Tania Major. Hands Across Australia School Competition 2011

Entries close today for this years competition!  From all over Australia school age children have come together to sing the Generation One theme song. The words "if you help me and I help you think of all the things that we could do" have been the inspiration for raps, dances and even a flash mob!  The 2011 School Song Competition entries close today.
